Nos encontramos con un maravilloso paisaje, realizado a principios del siglo XVI. A Patinir se le considera el precursor del paisajismo. En esta obra el pintor flamenco utiliza unos colores muy suaves, entre verdes y azules que unidos a un horizonte muy alto, consiguen un paisaje capaz de inspirar una gran tranquilidad. El tema parece únicamente un pretexto para recrearse en las vistas, ya que muchas de las figuras que aparecen en él son diminutas y casi imposibles de identificar.
A la izquierda vemos unos ángeles que aluden al paraíso terrenal. En el centro la laguna Estigia, que según la mitología clásica debían atravesar las almas de los difuntos guiados por el barquero Caronte, representado de mayor tamaño que el alma que transporta. A la derecha podemos ver al perro de las tres cabezas, el Cancerbero, que custodia las puertas del infierno.
